Why choose Oracle Cloud VMware Solution (OCVS) for your VMware migration? Learn 5 reasons in our blog.

Oracle Cloud VMware Solution (OCVS) is an innovative product that allows you to migrate your on-premises VMware workloads to Oracle Cloud's infrastructure.

The sell is simple: you can unlock the benefits of public cloud infrastructure without having to sacrifice familiar tools, processes and skills. As well as this continuity, OCVS gives you full administrative control of your workloads and zero-trust security.

So, what's your hurry? Well, there are a couple of pain points that might stop you from plumping for OCVS straight away. The first is that many enterprises find themselves experiencing delays when migrating to the cloud. And second, a surprising number of enterprises end up paying more than they bargained for.

Naturally, these factors lead to reluctance on the part of management to make the move. But on top of this, there's the simple fact that all the major service providers now offer cloud-based VMware offerings.

If you're already wary of delays and overpricing, a surfeit of options isn't going to help. What is there between Microsoft, Google, Alibaba, IBM, AWS and Oracle, exactly?

Well, at Ascend Cloud Solutions we've got the answers. Our migration and post-migration services are planned and executed around your business's needs and timescales – so you won't end up with an anxious eye on the clock or your balance sheet.

We can also tell you what makes Oracle Cloud VMware Solution so different – and why it's a wise option if you're looking to move your on-premises VMware workloads to the cloud.

So without further ado, what are the key differentiating factors that set OCVS aside from the rest?

1. Continuity of control

Let's start with a big one. If you run VMware workloads on bare metal servers, you're used to having complete administrative control. Moving to the cloud means handing over some of that control to the vendor – doesn't it?

Well, with VMware cloud offerings from AWS, Azure, Google and others, it does. But OCVS gives you exclusive access and full administrative control.

Aside from anything else, this means you can ensure continuity as you move from A to B. You're not going to have to rearchitect or refactor applications – and at the human level, you're not going to have to reskill your teams. Instead, you get your system as-is, only now with the additional benefits that public cloud infrastructure provides.

This applies to networking, too. You can run your network as you run your on-premises server, only now it's fully integrated into OCI's native services.

So, if you want to unlock the benefits of the public cloud without ripping up your system and starting again, consider OCVS. It gives you business-as-usual, only better – something that can't be said for other VMware cloud solutions, which tend to take away some of your administrative control.

2. Breadth of support

OCVS is a competitive solution in part because it supports a variety of SDDC bundles. Customers can choose between multi- and single-host SDDCs depending on their business's specific requirements.

It also supports a variety of versions, meaning greater continuity as you move your VMware workloads to Oracle's cloud infrastructure. This includes the following components:

  • ESXi 7.0, 6.7 or 6.5
  • HCX Advanced 4.0 or 3.5
  • HCX Enterprise
  • NSX-T 3.0
  • vCenter 7.0, 6.7 or 6.5
  • vSAN 7.0, 6.7 or 6.5

This breadth of support is one of the key reasons why you should consider OCVS as a new cloud environment for your enterprise.

3. Impressive reach

Global availability varies between providers. When it comes to reach, consistency and predictable pricing, OCVS takes the trophy. It's available in over 46 global regions – more than VMware Cloud on AWS, to take one key competitor.

It's also deployed across a minimum of three fault domains within a single availability domain (AD). However, you're also given the option to deploy across multiple ADs.

Where most hyperscalers only let you use two ADs and fault domains in one region, Oracle lets you distribute a minimum of three hosts in three separate ADs.

Put simply, more data centres mean a higher throughput and a lower latency. Translate that into business terms and you're looking at increased operational efficiencies, less downtime and more flexibility.

4. Flexible billing options

Let's face it – when choosing a cloud environment, money talks. It's not enough to enumerate the operational efficiencies and technical statistics. How much is it going to cost and will you get a good ROI?

In this respect, OCVS has the edge over its competitors by giving customers the option to pay monthly. Other providers will charge you on-demand (hourly), annually or triannually, with discounts increasing the longer you commit.

But OCVS is unique in throwing monthly billing into the mix. This means greater flexibility for finance, as well as IT.

5. External storage

Looking to scale your SDDC's storage layer but don't want to shell out for new compute resources? You're in luck. The OCI File Storage service can act as secondary storage for your OCVS cluster.

But this isn't the only option. OCVS customers can also connect to OCI block storage for external storage.

At the time of writing, this is something that Oracle is alone among its competitors in offering. So if you're looking for extra storage at the end of your migration journey, go for OCVS. You'll get what you're after without having to hold your nose and spend more on compute resources.

Conclusion

If you're looking to migrate your VMware workloads to the cloud, you should seriously consider moving to Oracle Cloud VMware Solution. It's the easiest way to ensure continuity as well as a service that's rich in availability, storage and flexible pricing.
